Growing up in the Philippines, trick-or-treating was something I only ever saw in movies. I remember watching kids in costumes running from house to house with buckets of candy, thinking, “That looks so fun!”, but it wasn’t really something we did back home. Halloween was more about spooky stories, TV specials with Magandang Gabi Bayan, Okatokat, and sometimes a costume party at school or with friends, but not the full-on trick-or-treat experience.
Fast forward to now, living in Australia, and we’re finally getting to experience it, even if in a different way. Of course, we’re a bit too old to go door-to-door with candy buckets (though it would be fun 😅), but we’ve found joy in taking on the other side of the tradition: preparing our home and handing out sweets to the neighborhood kids.
There’s something heartwarming about seeing the excitement on their faces, hearing their little “trick or treat!” at the door, and watching families stroll around in creative costumes. It’s like watching our childhood dream come to life, but this time, we get to be part of creating that magic for others.
It may not be the same as receiving the candy, but somehow, giving it feels even better. Here’s to fulfilling childhood dreams, even if it happens a little later in life
