When I first packed my bags and moved to Sydney, I knew I was in for a big adventure—but I didn’t realize just how much I’d learn along the way. Living here has been eye-opening, exciting, and sometimes even challenging. Here are five things I’ve learned since starting this new chapter in Sydney:
1. Shops close earlier than I expected
Back home, it’s normal to see stores open late into the evening, but in Sydney, many shops shut by 5 or 6 pm. It took some adjusting, but now I plan my errands earlier in the day (and I’ve learned to love online shopping even more).
2. Coffee is a serious business
Back in the Philippines, I was used to sweet, dessert-like coffees from places like Starbucks—lots of whipped cream, syrups, and sugar. But in Sydney, coffee is a whole different culture. People here take their flat whites, long blacks, and cappuccinos seriously. The focus is on the beans, the flavor, and the craft rather than sweetness. At first, I missed my caramel macchiato, but now I’ve come to appreciate how smooth and strong Aussie coffee is—it’s all about quality over sugar.

3. Work-life balance is real
I’ve noticed that people value their time outside of work. Weekends are for the beach, barbecues, and spending time outdoors. It’s refreshing to see a culture that encourages balance rather than constant hustle.
4. The beaches live up to the hype
Yes, Bondi is famous for a reason, but there are so many beautiful coastal spots beyond the tourist areas. I’ve learned that a quick bus or train ride can take me to beaches that feel like a mini-vacation.

5. “How are you?” doesn’t always mean what I think
One of the smaller culture shocks has been how Aussies use casual greetings. When someone says “How are ya?” it’s often just another way of saying hello, not always an invitation to share a full life update.
Moving to Sydney has been a mix of surprises and joys, but every lesson makes me feel more at home. I’m sure there are more discoveries ahead, but these first five have already shaped how I see life here.
What about you—what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from moving to a new place?
